Where photography is not allowed
- Inside Kashi Vishwanath and most temple sanctums — phones and cameras are not even allowed in.
- Cremations at Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats. Do not photograph pyres, bodies or mourners, from the steps or from a boat.
- Drones over the ghats, temples and the Dham need official permission; flying without it can lead to confiscation and fines.
- Security areas, police posts and the temple gates.
Photographing people
- Ask first. A smile and a gesture to your camera works in any language.
- Some sadhus pose for photos and expect a tip. Agree before you shoot, or don’t shoot.
- Never photograph people bathing, especially women.
- Children: ask their parents.
- Show people the photo afterwards — it is often the start of a good conversation.
At temples
Do
- Remove shoes before entering
- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered
- Walk clockwise around shrines
- Give and receive prasad with your right hand
- Follow the queue and staff instructions
Don’t
- Point your feet at deities or people
- Touch priests, offerings or images uninvited
- Use flash during aartis
- Carry leather into temples
- Raise your voice in the queue
At the cremation ghats
Manikarnika and Harishchandra are where Hindus believe death in Kashi brings liberation, and the fires burn day and night. Visitors are generally tolerated if they are quiet and respectful.
- Stand back from the pyres and let funeral processions pass.
- Keep your voice low and phones away.
- Self-appointed “guides” will explain the rituals and then ask for a large sum for “wood for the poor”. Politely decline; give to a recognised charity instead.
Taking a dip in the Ganga
- Bathe at a main bathing ghat (Dashashwamedh, Assi, Kedar) in daylight, close to the steps. Currents can be strong — do not swim out.
- Men usually bathe in a dhoti or shorts; women in a saree or salwar kameez. Bring a change of clothes and a towel.
- Do not use soap or shampoo in the river, and never throw plastic into it.
General courtesy
- Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
- Do not hand money to begging children; support an established charity.
- Cows have right of way in the lanes — step aside.
- Alcohol and meat are not sold near the temple and ghats; respect that.
