What is accessible
Easier
- The Kashi Vishwanath Dham, with ramps, wide paths and wheelchairs
- Main roads to Godowlia by car
- Sarnath (mostly flat and paved)
- New Vishwanath temple at BHU (level and spacious)
- Large hotels in the Cantonment and near Godowlia with lifts
Harder
- Most ghats — steep, uneven stone steps
- Narrow, crowded lanes of the old city
- Boarding rowing boats
- Festival crowds and Monday queues
- Small temples such as Kaal Bhairav and Vishalakshi
Darshan at Kashi Vishwanath
-
01
Book Sugam darshan
A shorter, more manageable queue at a fixed time. Differently abled devotees are reported not to need a paid ticket — ask at the help desk.
-
02
Get as close as possible by car
Ask your driver to drop you at the nearest permitted point; cycle-rickshaws can cover part of the remaining distance where allowed.
-
03
Ask for a wheelchair and attendant
The help desks in the Dham can arrange wheelchairs. Arrive early, especially on weekends.
-
04
Travel light
Leave phones and bags at the hotel so there is no locker queue.
Seeing the river without steps
- For the Ganga Aarti, a motorboat from a ghat with easier steps (Dashashwamedh, Assi) avoids the crowded stairs. Ask the boatman to help with boarding.
- Motorboats have seats and are more stable than rowing boats.
- Some riverside hotels and cafés have terraces with ghat views reachable by lift — ask before booking.
Hotels and transport
- Choose a hotel with a lift, a step-free entrance and road access; ask for photos of the entrance and the route to your room before booking.
- Hire a car with a driver rather than using auto-rickshaws.
- Accessible public toilets are limited; plan around your hotel and the facilities inside the Dham.
